Is your golf cart insured?
Golf carts are not required to be titled, registered, or insured with Personal Injury Protection and Property Damage Liability under Florida law. Although Florida law does not mandate insurance for golf carts, it is HIGHLY encouraged that coverage be obtained. Owners can still purchase liability insurance, medical payments coverage, and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage for additional protection.
For parents of children that drive golf carts, the law now requires that the child be 15 years old with a learner’s permit or 16 years old with a driver’s license. Golf carts are classified as a dangerous instrument like a motor vehicle. Some golf carts, based on size and weight, can also be covered under your homeowner’s policy.
One of our recent cases involved representation of a pedestrian who was struck by a golf cart which was operated by a minor (teenager). In addition to recovering the golf cart policy limits, we were able to make a recovery against the homeowner’s insurance policy of the parents.
We also recently represented a minor operating her family’s golf cart which was involved in a motor vehicle collision. There was a question of fault on both parties, however, we were able to recover the insurance of the car, which struck the golf cart.
If you own a golf cart, this information should encourage you to contact your insurance agent and secure coverage for your golf cart to provide your family essential protection in case of accidents or injuries.
Call your insurance agent TODAY to insure your golf cart to properly protect you and your loved ones.
Recent Accident? Your insurance coverage can be affected by what you do after a motor vehicle accident.
